The real maiko (apprentice geiko) and geiko (geisha) are flawless and move quickly — as opposed to the pretend ones who hang out on the street to take photos with tourists. Our tour guide arranged things so we'd be in Gion around the time the parties start so we could catch a glimpse of the real deal.
